Volcanic Experience – New Zealand Expedition and Residential
A unique opportunity to discover New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage, learn about the people, traditions and stories that connect New Zealand’s indigenous Maori people to the sacred mountains and rivers of the central North Island.
If you are ready for adventure, curious about culture and keen to have an amazing story to tell then our New Zealand Experience is for you! Your experience will include a 4 Day expedition on Mount Ruapehu, visits to local Maori Marae (meeting houses), historic and sacred sights plus familiarisation activities such as Black Water Rafting, Whanganui River Canoe and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
A Typical Gold Expedition
Day 1 – Arrive Auckland, relax and recover from your flight!
Day 2 – Auckland attractions then travel to Taumarunui.
Day 3 to 5 – Based in Taumarunui immersed in Maori and Kiwi culture. Includes Marae visit, Whanganui River canoe, Timber Trail mountain bike & alpine crossing day walk.
Day 7 & 8 – Based at the Taumarunui High School Mountain Lodge in Whakapapa Village you will prepare for your expedition. A trip to New Zealand’s highest cafe to take in the magnificent volcanic scenery.
Day 9 to 12 – Expedition! You will navigate your way through bush, alpine and desert landscapes as you journey all the way around Mount Ruapehu.
Day 13 – Expedition debrief, clear lodge and return to Taumarunui. Prepare presentations.
Day 14 – Black Water Rafting at the Waitomo Caves . In the evening you will make your final presentations. Parents are invited to watch these via video conference.
Day 15 – Return to Auckland and flights home.

“Oh – I walked around an active volcano in New Zealand and learnt about the significance f the mountains in Maori culture.”

“I learnt about the myths and legends of New Zealand/Aotearoa. I learnt to speak Te Reo Maori. I learnt about the rivers and mountains of New Zea-land/Aotearoa. I learnt Kapa Haka. I visited a Marae, met Kaumatua (Elders) and helped to prepare traditional food – Hangi.”

The package cost per candidate will be £1600.
Deposit – £300 to Hasbury Expeditions by 30th March 2018
Balance – £1300 to Hasbury Expeditions by 30th June 2018
Flights – We will co-ordinate booking of flights in April 2018
